LASIK:
LASIK—short for Laser-Assisted-In-Situ Keratomileusis—is the most commonly performed laser eye procedure in the world. It’s one of the safest and most effective ways to correct vision. The procedure is used to treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism. Like other types of refractive surgery, the LASIK procedure reshapes the cornea to enable light entering the eye to be properly focused onto the retina for clearer vision.
Conventional LASIK: With conventional LASIK, your prescription is manually entered into the laser. Conventional LASIK is the original LASIK procedure, and still an excellent choice. However, your surgeon may determine that you could benefit more from the higher level of customization that Custom LASIK provide.
Custom LASIK: Your cornea is like your fingerprint; no two are alike. With Custom LASIK, a customized map is created for each eye. This data allows for treatment of tiny imperfections in the eye that can have a significant impact on your quality of vision.
COUNTOURA LASIK: Contoura™ Vision is a topography-guided LASIK treatment designed to provide a more personalized laser procedure for patients with nearsightedness, or nearsightedness with astigmatism, based on the unique corneal topography of each eye. Contoura™ Vision creates a Highly Precise and Accurate map of a patient’s eyes measuring up to 22,000 unique elevation points on each eye.
PRK:
Photorefractive Keratectomy, more commonly called PRK, like LASIK, also utilizes a laser to reshape the curvature of the eye to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The different is that it is performed on the surface of the eye and no flap is created. Many patients benefit from custom PRK, which provides your surgeon an additional level of data about your vision requirements using customized wavefront technology. PRK is suitable for people with larger pupils, thin corneas, and/or dry eyes, and those who have other corneal issues.
SMILE:
SMILE stands for “Small Incision Lenticule Extraction”; it is the latest advancement is laser vision correction for myopia (near-sightedness) and astigmatism, provided LASIK-like outcomes in a minimally-invasive procedure. A laser is used to create a thin, contact lens-shaped layer just beneath the surface of the eye and then a small opening, through which the layer is removed. SMILE causes less disruption of the corneal nerves than other laser vision procedures. As a result, you may have even lower chances of dry eye. It is ideal for people with thin corneas, dry eyes or contact lens intolerance, similar to LASIK and PRK.
ICL:
An ICL, also called an Implantable Collamer® Lens, is a refractive implant to correct common vision issues like myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism. ICLs are clear lenses that are surgically implanted to sit in front of the eye’s natural lens, behind the iris, much in the same way that contact lenses sit on the cornea to reduce your dependency on glasses and contact lenses. ICLs function like contact lenses—except they work from within your eyes instead of sitting directly on their surface. Unlike some other vision correction options, the Visian ICL is an additive technology that corrects vision without the removal of any corneal tissue.
